The Dragon and the Lotus

More bugs! More flowers! More bugs on flowers!

Magic Beans

More dead flowers! Or something. Wild blue indigo seed pods turn a silvery charcoal color in the fall, and dried seeds rattle around in brittle pods when the wind blows. Imagine an entire symphony of baby rattles...

Bridge to Somewhere

Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, the actual point of all this really is to get you from one place to another. The Wabasha Street bridge in downtown St. Paul opened to
traffic in July of 1998, but the elaborate stair towers on either side took an additional three years to complete.

Cave of Wonders

Just another frozen waterfall.

A Mill Update

There's been a small change or two recently, including a bit of 'bridge bling,' and the massive riverfront makeover finally landing on the east bank.

You Scratch My Back...

Coneflowers are cool. And friendly.

Hello Myself, Gosling Edition

Its not often that you get to meet yourself for the first time.

We're Not Using it Anymore

Flour mill surplus. Lightly used. (Actually, its from the Washburn-Crosby mill. Perhaps its a fire sale?)

Nearing the End

I love dead flowers! Often the most striking lines and colors come as they slowly fade away.

Gone Fishing

Trout lilies come up thick in places, so that long before the trees have their leaves back the forest floor is a sea of green. There might be a hundred lush green plants that don't flower in a given year for every one that does.

Skyline Fantasy

My favorite view of Minneapolis, looking downstream from Broadway Ave.

Split Rock Sunrise

The 97 year old Split Rock lighthouse greets the new day from a 130' cliff on Superior's north shore.

A Mill is a Mill

The last of the mighty water driven flour mills that made Minneapolis what it is, and the monumental stone arch bridge, which once carried the Empire Builder across the river.

Tiny Toad

This is a toad, right? (bufo americanus, anyone?) Whatever its name, this sure was a little thing, not much more than thumbnail sized.

Here be Dragons

I don't know much about different sorts of dragonflies. This is the kind that looks good against a white background. Its important to be specific.

Common Pipe Swallow

OK, you got me. Its a common tree swallow. I think he's sitting on a rusty pipe to flaunt his fashion sensibilities. Complementary colors and all that. You know.

Bee Pink

One of my favorite 'insect crawling on delicately colored flower' photos. I have no idea what sort of flower this is, though.

Sanguine

Bloodroots are far and away my favorite flower. Its an inspiration to see them jutting up from the layer of dead leaves, well before the rest of the forest has awakened. In a couple short weeks, they're gone again for the year. "Sangine" in English means hopeful or optimistic, but the Latin root means blood or bloody. The scientific name for bloodroot is "Sanguinaria Canadensis."

Not Laughing

A somewhat less common view of Minnehaha falls.

Falling

Minnehaha Falls

In the Ring

These steel rings were driven into solid rockfaces below Taylor's Falls to moor the riverboats that worked the St. Croix.

Boom Island Moonlight

On a hot summer night, the downstream view from Boom Island always reminds me of some sort of gaudy river carnival.

Vigilant

I scared this great egret out of the river, but it wasn't about to give up on its fishing spot just because I was so intrusive. I eventually gave up and left before the egret did.

Heron & Wood Duck

I was so busy watching the heron I almost missed the wood duck. If I hadn't missed my focus by chance, I might not have noticed what the smallish blob in the background was.

Cattail Camouflage

A Canada Goose keeps a watchful eye as his mate nests just out of sight.

Last Year's Model

I love how last years cattails are still standing, even as the new ones grow all around them.

Ant & Coneflower

Purple coneflowers are my favorite late-summer flowers. They just get prettier as they slowly dry up and fade away.

Everyone Loves a Parade

The Fort Snelling parade ground, from atop the round tower.

Snowy Parkway

Theodore Wirth Parkway after a spring snowstorm. (Original on 6x6 B/W film)

Little Lily Raygun

A white trout lily in full bloom.

Peek-a-Boo!

A backyard guest comes out of hiding after the rain stops.
